Photography of A Beautifully Remodeled Manhattan Beach Home

February 18, 2017

Sometimes everything just works.  This was one of those photography jobs where that was definitely the case.  The architecture and design of this Manhattan Beach home were gorgeous -the owner did the remodeling himself, believe it or not!  To add to what was already a lovely looking space, the stylist's staging worked to create a palpably welcoming feel.  Combine these elements with great ambient lighting and a whole weekend to myself to photograph it, and you just know things will turn out great!

A behind the scenes photo of me deciding where to put my lights for this shot

A behind the scenes photo of me making a dopey face while deciding where to put my lights

I originally went to this shoot the same afternoon as another one I had scheduled in Long Beach that day.  The Manhattan Beach condo was on my way home, and despite it being a bit later than I would have liked, I decided to head over there to photograph it.  I did what I could before the sun went down, but I was unable to finish.  Well, that's not entirely true - I could have kept shooting after the sun had set, but I chose not to.  I loved the natural light in this place so I decided I would return the following day to capture that.

I don't regularly head all the way over to Manhattan Beach for photography work - especially two days in a row - but this was a treat for me to get to shoot.  Thanks for reading!

Interior Design Photography In Sherman Oaks, CA

November 07, 2016

I was recently hired to photograph the home of a new client in Sherman Oaks, CA.  Their intention for the images was for marketing their home, not for real estate, but to be used in film and television productions.   They have rented out their home many times over the years to various film and television productions and recently did some heavy duty remodeling.  They hired me to showcase the spaciousness (ideal for production crews) and unique look of their gorgeous home.

While very similar to real estate photography, interior design and architectural photography allows you to take a little more time and care with each photograph.  Shoots like this are less about working as quickly as possible and more about choosing more thoughtful compositions and preparing the lighting in a way that enhances the final image.  Shoots like this also tend to have a lot more detail photographs which narrow the focus of the compositions.

I loved the look of this kitchen and dining room.  Honestly, if time and budget allowed I would have spent most of the day photographing these spaces.  Everywhere I looked I saw new opportunities for amazing shots.

While I originally composed this shot as a 3:2 aspect ratio I ended up cropping it to be 1:1, as I felt it was much stronger:

VIDEO Behind The Scenes At A Real Estate Photography Shoot In The San Fernando Valley

October 04, 2016

I edited and uploaded this video awhile ago, but it seems I forgot to upload it here.  Whoops!

This was a fun real estate photography video to edit.  It's sometimes tricky to shoot behind the scenes stuff, but its always a lot of fun to edit.

Here's the video of me at this shoot:

Luxury Real Estate Photography In Northridge, CA

July 27, 2016

This house was a dream to photograph!  Not only was it five minutes from my place, but this house offered a lot of unique photographic opportunities.  There were quite a few lighting challenges to overcome, but they were the rewarding kind.

At this shoot, I had a couple of furry helpers following me around.  I thought I had managed to keep them out of the final images, but I did miss one...

I don't usually use umbrellas when photographing and lighting a room, but when I do it is almost always in the kitchen.

Here is a quick behind the scenes video of how I lit the previous kitchen shot:

I really liked how this one point perspective image of the kitchen turned out.  I was able to leave most of the lights in place from the previous photo and just focus on the composition.

When I entered the master bedroom and adjoining rooms, it became even more apparent that a musician owned the place.  I liked his style and he pulled off what I believed to be an impossible feat: making pink walls work!

When I do luxury real estate and architecture photography, I normally have to travel much farther than my own neighborhood.  What a great hidden gem in my own backyard.  Getting the chance to do luxury real estate photography in Northridge, CA was a welcome reprieve...especially since I got to skip the 405 freeway!
